CCBA Minutes

Crystal Coast Beekeepers Association

August 10, 2009 Minutes

Introduction of new members and visitors.

July minutes were approved by Darlene and David.

We have been asked to present at the boy scouts jamboree in October. However, the jamboree is fairly far away (west of Carthage), so we are going to suggest that they contact another beekeepers association closer to them.

Tia, Dan, Eva, and Julie will be presenting at the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation day for kids on September 19th from 10am-2pm.

The GAP committee recommended that we might want to think about doing some fund raising so that we can make donations to support bee research or other bee related programs. One possibility is for us to sell a beekeepers garden calendar. They cost $10 and recommended retail is $20. Some members felt the price of the calendar was pretty steep.

Tia also mentioned a program where we could sell wildflower seeds in bulk.

Tia is going to send a write-up to the newspaper announcing that August 22 is National honeybee awareness day.

We need to find a location where the spring NC Beekeepers meeting could be held. Julie is going to check around with some of the schools. Mary has some ideas as well that she will look into.

Julie volunteered to represent our chapter on the GAP committee board.

17 people recently took the new beekeepers class, 14 of them took the exam.

Members should send beekeeping news to Russ (such as how your hives are doing). He will use this information to start a newsletter on our website which will serve to inform people about what is going on with other's hives in this area, and it will also help us obtain more points for next years GAP.

Our next meeting (September) is going to be open to the public so that people can learn about beekeeping. Bring a jar of honey, or an item made with honey (bring the recipe if you make an item) to share with everyone.

The meeting was led by Peggy as Tia was not able to attend.

Four new members were present at the meeting.

Russ announced that he thinks the club won the Golden Achievement Award.

A sheet was passed around for everyone to list how many hives they have- the total was 155.

Peggy asked if other members are getting much honey, and said that it appears that the flow has come to a stand still. There are reports that sourwood isn't doing much, which may be affecting the flow.

Russ showed everyone a bee box that was made out of an old stump.

Members discussed the crush and strain method of honey extraction.

Anne discussed the Journeyman test which many members recently took.

Scott brought in some requeening frames and they sold like hotcakes. He said that they are good for stronger hives that might be less willing to accept a new queen.

Many members are now selling queens, nucs, and bees (Loren and Peggy, Scott, David).

We now have 60 members in the club as we enter into our third year.

We received an invitation to family night at the Aquarium in July.

We have the opportunity to sell honey at the State Fair, which would also give us some publicity.

Now is the time to register for the summer NCSBA meeting that will be held July 9th-11th.

Tia asked that members take a look at the State Associate amendments which were sent to the club for comments.

The Coastal Community Market in Beaufort on Broad Street would like to purchase honey

from members. Anne mentioned a market in Davis that is also interested in selling member's honey.

The club voted to purchase a textbook titled “ Honeybee Biology and Beekeeping”. The book will be loaned out first to members of the club, then we'll likely donate it to a local library.

Our monthly meeting will now be held at the Morehead City Parks and Recreation building on the corner of Fisher Street and 16th. Meetings will begin at their regular time (7pm).

The day trip to Goldsboro is still set for May 23rd to visit the Spring Bank Apiary. Rich Coor will be giving a presentation on queen rearing. Meet at the CMAST parking lot at 6:30 am. Bring a veil and other protective gear. Contact Peggy or Loren if you have any questions.

Board Member Meeting

Tia asked if she should proceed with looking into the feasibility of our club holding the NCSBA annual beekeepers convention next spring or summer. Mr Dowty brought the motion forward, which  was seconded by all present.

We discussed the need for encouraging people who attend meetings, but have not paid their dues, to join the club since membership dues help pay for events (pig picking, raffle, break snacks) enjoyed by all. Prospective members may only pay local dues ($10) if they do not have additional funds for State dues ($15) as well.

Loren brought forward the issue of forming committees to organize events. At this time we will likely opt to form commitees on an as needed basis.

Loren suggested that emails sent to all members should be done in a matter so that everyone's email addresses are not listed, such as a blind listserve. Russ is going to see about creating a location on our website where member's emails can be accessed by password.

The room that we currently hold meetings in at CMAST is becoming rather crowded as membership grows. We decided that we should look into other possible locations to hold meetings that may offer more spacious settings.

There is interest among board members of starting a new beekeeper scholarship program. We will discuss this topic further in the future. We also discussed the feasibility of obtaining a bee yard, but decided that liability and cost would likely outweigh the benefits of such a program. Many members however, signed the sign-up sheet during the March meeting to mentor new beekeepers.

Tia is going to send a list of members who would like to be a part of the bee disaster clean up force to local EMS and the police department.

Club Meeting

Tia passed around sign-up sheets for people interested in mentoring and being mentored about beekeeping, as well as sheets for the bee disaster clean-up force.

Mary and Wayne approved the minutes for the March meeting, and the treasurer report was approved by Tia and seconded by Frank.

Tia discussed the highlights of the board member meeting, and reminded people that they need to pay their dues if they haven't already.

Suzane Rutherford gave a presentation on how to create a bee garden.

Loren and Peggy discussed the BBQ that will be held at their house this Saturday. People can arrive around 11-11:30. If they want to view their hives, and should bring a veil and long-sleeved white shirt.

We'll start eating around 1.

The day trip to Goldsboro is still set for May 23rd to visit the Spring Bank Apiary. Rich Coor will be

giving a presentation on queen rearing. Meet at the CMAST parking lot at 6:30 am.

The GAP application has been submitted.

A sign-up sheet was sent around for people to sign:

a). if they would be willing to mentor new beekeepers, or if they are a new beekeeper that would like to be mentored.

b). if they would be willing to help in the event that a truck transporting boxes of bees turned over and the bees needed to be righted back on the truck (Bee disaster clean up force).

We discussed whether we should pursue hosting next year's NCSBA annual beekeepers convention. We'll continue to discuss this topic.

The Carteret Local Food Network is having an Earth Fair and would like us to set up a booth. This event would likely be held at the PKS Aquarium in April.

Brushy Mountain Bee Farm is presenting 2 hour webinars on various beekeeping topics.

An Advanced Beekeepers course will be held on June 13th from 8:30-4:30. This course will help prepare beekeepers for their Journeyman's test. People who are already certified beekeepers can teach a subject during the class to get points for the teaching portion of their Journeyman's certification. Anne will put together a list of key topics that people may want to present on.

A Beginner's Beekeeping course will be held on July 28th, July 30th, August 4th, and August 6th, with a Saturday in the bee yard.

A pig picking will be held on April 18th around noon at Peggy and Loren's house. People can bring a side if they would like. We'll look in on the hives in their yard around 2.

An overnight or day trip is in the making for a trip to Goldsboro on May 23rd to visit the Spring Bank Apiary.

The Honey Festival is tentatively set for September 19th in downtown Morehead City.

Donna may be giving a candle making demonstration in the fall.

Various mini presentations were given during the meeting about: introducing a box of bees to the hive, small hive beetle prevention without the use of chemicals, checking for varroa mites using the sugar shake method, fogging a hive with mineral oil.

Adolphus Leonard gave an informative and exciting presentation to a full house on Small Scale Queen Rearing.

Certificates of appreciation were handed out to past board members.

A request was made for items that can be included in our Golden Achievement Program (GAP) book.

Loren mentioned the possibility of having a honey harvesting festival. Loren and Peggy should be contacted for more information.

Russ described his correspondence with a man who wanted to see if the club would be interested in participating in a grant program where we would receive harvesting equipment in exchange for mentoring a new beekeeper. General consensus was that the club is interested. Russ will keep us updated regarding the approval of the grant.

People who are interested in helping with or collecting swarms need to contact Russ so the swarm list can be updated.

Tia discussed a letter she received asking if we would be interested in trying (buying) a special type of paint that is supposed to guard hives from CCD. No one was interested in pursuing this.

There was interest among club members to have an informative booth at the Coastal Federation's (CF) Native Plant Sale.
